When the evening is spread out against the sky,
Like a patient etherized upon a table.
At my last eye exam, my optometrist told me I needed to take more frequent breaks when reading books or using the computer. And apparently going on Facebook as a “break” doesn’t count because I’m still using my eyes. Staring off into space is awfully boring, so I decided to use my eye breaks to memorize poetry. So far I’ve memorized about one fifth of T.S. Eliot’s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. I’ve had a little crush on the first line of this poem ever since high school, so it’s been nice getting acquainted with the rest of the work. I have the habit of reciting that magical line whenever I am hanging out with someone and he or she (preferably the former though, as far as ambiance is concerned) happens to say “let’s go.” So far no one has batted an eye or cared, let alone been moved or wooed. Poetry apparently just doesn’t interest people anymore. Or maybe I need to work more on my delivery. Either way, weeeeep. :(
