Sainte Chapelle, Paris
The word “Gothic” evokes for most people these days images of moody teens clad head-to-toe in black, but Gothic architecture was actually all about light. The amount of light one partakes was thought to correlate with one’s relationship to God; the greater the amount of light, the closer to God. Kind of a romantic concept, except it was useful for justifying racism.
